Commanding General's Biography

Major General (MG) Christopher S. Ballard

Commanging General

Major General Christopher S. Ballard was appointed as Commanding General, U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM), Fort Belvoir, Virginia, on June 27, 2016.

MG Ballard is a career Army Intelligence Officer who has served as a Ground Surveillance Radar Platoon Leader and Armored Battalion S-2 in the 3rd Armored Division; Infantry Battalion and Brigade S-2 in the 25th Infantry Division (Light); Intelligence Plans Officer in III Armored Corps; Military Intelligence (MI) Battalion S-3 in the 1st Cavalry Division; and a senior Intelligence Observer/Trainer with the Army's Battle Command Training Program (BCTP). He has also served as an MI Assignments Officer at the Army's Human Resources Command (HRC).

MG Ballard has commanded at the company, battalion, and brigade levels with combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan as a Battalion Commander and Combined/Joint principal Intelligence Staff Officer. His commands include Headquarters Company, 125th MI Battalion, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; 312th MI Battalion, Fort Hood, Texas, and Operation IRAQI FREEDOM; and the 500th MI Brigade, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Other key assignments include Assistant Chief of Staff, G-3, U.S. Army INSCOM and G-3/Director, Army Cyber Operations Integration Center, Second Army/U.S. Army Cyber Command (ARCYBER), Fort Belvoir, Virginia; C/J-2, Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan (CSTC-A), Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, Afghanistan; and Deputy Chief of Staff, Intelligence, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command (ISAF-IJC), Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, Afghanistan.

MG Ballard holds a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and German from Furman University, a Master's Degree in International Relations from Indiana University, and a Master's Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the National War College.

MG Ballard's awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, the Parachutist Badge, and the Air Assault Badge.
