Command Chief Warrant Officer

Chief Warrant Officer 5 Jonathan E. Irby assumed responsibility as the Command Chief Warrant Officer for the U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM) on July 9, 2021.

CW5 Irby is a native of Scottsdale, Arizona and entered the U.S. Army as an Arabic Cryptologic Linguist in January 1995, after earning his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and East Asian Studies at Arizona State University.

After his enlisted assignments as a Tactical Intercept Operator and Operations Sergeant with the 1st Cavalry and 1st Armored Divisions, he entered the Arabic Military Language Analysis Program at National Security Agency/Central Security Service (NSA/CSS) Washington. Upon selection as a Warrant Officer Candidate, CW5 Irby served his first Warrant Officer assignment as the Language Mission Director for a Middle East Analysis Center at NSA/CSS Georgia.

CW5 Irby’s has had a variety of assignments, where he served as Chief of Instruction for the Cryptologic Linguist (MOS 35P) School, Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas, where he established the first Army Iraqi Dialect Course for the Army and Marine Corps Cryptologic Linguists deploying to Iraq; the Detachment Officer in Charge, 224th Aerial Exploitation Battalion, Ft. Gordon, Georgia, where he led a detachment of over 30 Soldiers and managed the first Army Aerial Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) integration into NSA/CSS Georgia, culminating in the establishment of the Army’s first Aerial Military Intelligence Brigade and the Army Processing Exploitation Dissemination (PED) Center of Excellence, Ft. Gordon, Georgia; J-2 ISR, Special Operations Command Africa (SOCOM), overseeing the collection for theater Special Forces arrayed in three subordinate regional commands deployed across Africa in support of 17 separate named operations; and the Senior Technical Advisor in the Intelligence Capabilities and Requirements Division, SOCOM’s J-2; where he worked as the lead requirements manager for multiple special operations acquisition programs equipping over 1,700 SOF SIGINT operators.

CW5 Irby has deployed to Kosovo in support of Operation JOINT FORGE; Iraq in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM; and multiple times in support of Operation NEW DAWN and various operational locations in the region as a Senior Analyst and Partner Advisor.

He holds a Master of Science in Strategic Intelligence from the National Intelligence University; and his military education includes the Arabic Basic Course at the Defense Language Institute - Foreign Language Center, the Voice Intercept Operator Course at Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas; Primary Leadership Development Course, Voice Intercept Operator Basic Non-Commissioned Officer Course, Warrant Officer Candidate School, the Military Intelligence Warrant Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Warrant Officer Intermediate-Level Education, and the Warrant Officer Senior Staff Education.

CW5 Irby’s awards and decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (3rd award), the Army Meritorious Service Medal (2nd award), the Army Commendation Medal (2nd award), the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Army Achievement Medal (3rd award), the Army Good Conduct Medal (2nd award), the National Defense Service Medal (2nd award), the Kosovo Campaign Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the NATO Medal. He is a recipient of the Capt. Joseph Rochefort Award for career linguistic achievement and achieved Distinguished Honor Graduate at the US Army Warrant Officer Candidate School.
