Major General (MG) Gary W. Johnston

Commanging General

Major General Gary W. Johnston was appointed as Commanding General, U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM), Fort Belvoir, Virginia, on June 11, 2018.

MG Johnston received his commission from Arkansas Tech University in 1987.

MG Johnston most recently served as Deputy Chief of Staff, Intelligence, Resolute Support Mission, North Atlantic Treaty Organization/Director, J-2, U.S. Forces-Afghanistan, OPERATION FREEDOM'S SENTINEL. He previously commanded at the Company, Battalion and Brigade levels, including 504th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, III Corps; 165th Military Intelligence Battalion, 205th Military Intelligence Brigade; and A Company, 302d Military Intelligence Battalion, 205th Military Intelligence Brigade. He has deployed in support of Operations DESERT SHIELD, DESERT STORM, JOINT ENDEAVOR, ENDURING FREEDOM, and FREEDOM'S SENTINEL.

He has held positions as Director of Intelligence, J-2, U.S. Special Operations Command; Deputy Commanding General (Operations), U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command; Assistant Chief of Staff, G-2, XVIII Airborne Corps; Deputy J2, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command (ISAF-IJC), Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, Afghanistan; Director of Operations, Biometrics Task Force, HQDA G-3/5/7; Director, Initiatives Group, HQDA G-2; Battalion S-3, 205th Military Intelligence Battalion; Chief, V Corps All Source Production Branch; Squadron S-2, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment; and Platoon Leader, G Company, 2d Military Intelligence Battalion, 111th Military Intelligence Brigade.

His Joint and Combined assignments include Commander, Task Force 165 in support of Combined/Joint Task Force 76 in Bagram, Afghanistan; Commander, Combined Task Force Viper, Spin Boldak, Afghanistan; Deputy Director of Operations, Joint Intelligence Center Central, U.S. Central Command; Chief, WMD Analysis Branch, Joint Intelligence Center Central; and Executive Officer, Directorate of Operations, Joint Intelligence Center Pacific.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Arkansas Tech University; a Master of Science of Strategic Intelligence from the Joint Military Intelligence College; and a Master's Degree from the U.S. Army War College. He is a graduate of the Military Intelligence Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Post Graduate Intelligence Program, Command and General Staff College, and the Joint Forces Staff College.

MG Johnston's awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal (2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters), Legion of Merit (2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters), Bronze Star Medal (2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters), Defense Meritorious Service Medal (1 Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster), Meritorious Service Medal (1 Silver Oak Leaf Cluster), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (3 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters), the Army Achievement Medal (3 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters), Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, and Army Staff Identification Badge.
